Sexual Anorexia There is hope for recovery
Sexual Anorexia is the avoidance of giving and receiving social, sexual, or emotional nourishment. It is compulsive.
Expressions of Sexual Anorexia:
- Not having sex for years
- Being in a relationship but not emotionally close
- Barely social
- No intimate friendships
- Some overwhelmed in social settings
- Others socialize with many but are intimate with no one
- Paralyzed by shyness
- Intense in only one area of a relationship e.g. emotional
Sexual promiscuity may hide an avoidance of intimacy.
Co-dependence which can appear like a relationship, may hide a resistance to real relationship.
Some know how to give love but are unaware that love can be given to them.
Some know what it is to respond to others needs but are not aware of what their own needs might be.
Sexual Anorexia is not trusting, not committing, not surrendering. It is acting in. It is refusing to act. It is forbidding to allow movement or flow.
The inability to stop or change this activity means that the person is addicted to anorexia.
Sexual anorectics may be people who want to want a healthy intimate sexual relationship.
Often Sex addicts are anorexic as they experience a 'binge & purge' behaviour. Also the spouse and eventually the children of a sex addict can become anorexic as the 'energies' in the family seek a natural balance.
The consequences of sexual anorexia can be severe and include poor health, depression, suicidal behaviour and isolation.
Anorexia, the avoidances and deprivations are considered part of the family of the addictions. As a result the help of others is essential in the healing process.
The healing journey moves towards the goal of a healthy sexuality. The journey includes the understanding of anorexic behaviour, and developing the skills for relationships in light of difficulties people have experienced. Sessions Available
