Sexual Addiction

There is hope for recovery from sexual addiction. Addictions are an integral part of our human infrastructure. They are as old as humanity itself. They have their origins in that chaotic unformed state of fear.

The Addictive System

The addictive system always presents itself in a panic situation. Beguiled by cynicism, it makes promises that it cannot deliver. It enslaves as it consumes what life still exists to the desperate victim. It does not matter how unreal, how ugly or how demanding the substitute is, it is better than no substitute to the overwhelmed and insecure self.

Some Questions for Your Consideration

  • Is my sexual behavior out of control?
  • Do I experience severe consequences due to sexual behavior?
  • Do I persistently pursue self-destructive or high-risk behavior?
  • Do I experience an ongoing desire or effort to limit my sexual behavior?
  • Is sexual obsession and fantasy a primary coping strategy?
  • Do I need to increase the amount/intensity of my sexual experience?
  • Do I have severe mood changes around sexual activity?
  • Do I spend inordinate amounts of time in obtaining sex, being sexual, or recovering from sexual experience?
  • Do I neglect important social, occupational or recreational activities because of sexual behavior?

If you answered “yes” to more than one of these questions you may need therapy.
